As an American I must say that I never thought I’d find myself in need of a VPN software. After all, The United States is fairly “easy-going” when it comes to the topic of internet censorship and internet independence.

Then, in the fall of 2011 I made a sudden move to Budapest, Hungary for work. A long with peanut butter and a few other american consumer good products, the only other thing I found myself missing was my American IP address.

“Why would you miss your American IP address?” you might ask…

Well, for good reason! There are a lot of great websites, companies, and programs that you simply cannot access without a US IP address. Trust me, I found this out very quickly.

I couldn’t watch videos on abc.com, espn.com, or another other major news network for that matter. Every time I would try to stream a video it would give me an error message that would say something a long the lines of “This content is not available in your geographic area.” BUMMER!

I also discovered that some of my favorite services like Netflix.com, Hulu.com, and Pandora.com were also not available in my geographic area. Netflix has done a lot of expansion recently into places like Canada, UK, Denmark, and other places in Europe. However, when you access netflix from an IP address outside the USA, you get a modified movie library to choose from that only shows titles that are licensed for your country / geographic area. For example – The US Netflix library has over 10,000 more titles than the Canadian Netflix library and the same holds true for other markets.

All of this lead me to a big decision…

I needed to sign up for VPN software and I’d need the best VPN software online.

The reason I needed to find the “Best VPN Software” online was because if I intended to stream movies, audio, and other video clips from Europe, I’d need a VPN Software Company that offered a wide range of IP addresses that would allow me to surf the web as if I was back in the US.
The search was not easy and I made a lot of stupid mistakes. I signed up with a ton of VPN providers that offered a shitty service (excuse my language). Some of the providers straight up lied on their websites to get me to sign up (not cool)!
I also tried using a free proxy websites (the kind kids use to access Facebook from High School). That was another fail!
Then I came across a company called Hidemyass.com. I’ll be honest, I was initially turned off by the name but the website was the most professional I had come across and the support team responded to my questions almost immediately! I was relieved and decided to give them a go.
It turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve made!

Hidemyass is also super easy to connect to. Once the software is installed (it’s like a 2 minute installation and it works on linux, windows, and mac – There’s also support for android and ios devices) all you have to do is select your desired new ip address from the drop down menu and every application accessing the internet on your computer will immediately start connect to the internet through your new ip address.

Hidemyass also has a feature called load-balancing which is really helpful. This means that if you’re connecting to a certain geographic area, Hidemyass will recommend a connection with the fewest users to ensure you have the best and fastest connection possible. Pretty cool, right ?

There are so many other reasons why I feel Hidemyass is the best vpn software you’ll find on the web but because this post is getting long, I’ll wrap it up and just say this: I never thought I’d use a VPN and after trying a ton of different VPN providers and proxy options, I’m just really really happy I found Hidemyass VPN.
